I don’t normally believe in love at first sight but after meeting my husband I now believe in fate.
It was back in the spring of 2002. Chilly but not cold, Saturday night with nothing to do. My girlfriend called me up and asked me to take a ride with her down to Waldorf. She had been on a mission to locate an ex boyfriend of hers for quite a while and she heard he was working as a bartender at the Applebee’s in Southern Maryland. It wasn’t exactly what I had planned for a Saturday night but I figured what the heck! I threw on some old jeans and a t-shirt and headed out.
There we were in Applebee’s with no one that we knew, the ex boyfriend didn’t work there after all. We made the best of it and ordered some food and drinks and had a nice little girls night out. As corny as it sounds, across a smoke filled room, I saw him sitting at one of the tables with a group of friends. I was recently divorced and a little gun shy so all that I could muster up was a little wave and a smile. He waved and smiled back but that was it. My girlfriend, Layla, told me to go and talk to him but I just couldn’t do it. We finished eating and we about to head out when one of the waitresses ask us what we were up to tonight. We had no big plans so we asked what was “hot” in Waldorf. Keep in mind, this was a while ago so I was a bit younger and had a lot more energy and ambition on a Saturday night than I do now! She steered us in the right direction and sent us off to a local nightclub called Legends. It was quite different that was I was used to. I was born an raised in DC and Waldorf was a little town that was almost “off the map” to me. However, we had fun and made the best of it. The night was about over and there he was. That handsome blue eyed man that I had seen at Applebee’s. Oh yea, I almost forgot the most important part! While leaving Applebee’s he waved good bye through a window and I said to Layla “Who knows, I may have just walked away from my future husband”!
Once again, I was still at the once bitten twice shy stage and I couldn’t find it in me to confront him. He was definitely trying to get my attention but I just laughed it off.
Finally we headed out and were JUST about to leave when Layla saw a guy in a car that she thought was to good to pass up! I BEGGED her to keep going but she refused. There I was sitting in her car with my shoes off and my hair a mess…waiting. I was waiting for her to finish getting this guys number so we could go. She yelled from the other car for me to come over (we were at a gas station, so it was safe enough). I really didn’t want to but she wouldn’t let it go. I hopped out of the car with no shoes on and drug myself over there.
Guess who, it was my blue eyed shadow of the night! We talked, went to breakfast and eventually about 3 years later made it down the isle to say “I do”. If that isn’t fate, I don’t know what is!
