To bring to the forefront the interests of the developing advanced biofuels industry, Advanced Biofuels USA, has been founded in Frederick, Maryland. “The goal of Advanced Biofuels USA,” said founder Joanne Ivancic, “is to show the American people and their elected representatives that US farmers and researchers together can produce sustainable and economical biofuels that will directly replace all types of transportation fuels including gasoline and jetfuel.”
“With the 2007 Energy Bill calling for a minimum of 21 Billion gallons of Advanced Biofuels by 2022, the time has come for the development of an economically and environmentally sustainable advanced biofuels industry,” continued Joanne. “We have a long way to go. Farmers will have to adopt new energy crops, new conversion processes have to be perfected, and existing agricultural processing plants and ethanol refineries will have to be updated. With exciting research already started, I believe this can happen.”
Advanced Biofuels USA will give individuals, farm coops, start-up companies, and large producers a chance to work together to advance their common goals. Bob Kozak, president of Atlantic Biomass Conversion, and a founding member, hopes other companies on the cutting-edge of technology will come on board. “All of us working in the trenches know we need help telling our story in Washington but we don’t have the time or money to do it right. I think Advanced Biofuels USA will be a great ‘force-multiplier’ for us all.”
Advanced Biofuels USA will be great help to everyone involved in the entire chain of advanced biofuel production. For everyone from algae and energy grass producers to enzyme developers, Advanced Biofuels USA will provide a crucial voice in the coming decisions on funding and use of advanced biofuels. Advanced Biofuels USA will enable members to tell their important stories to the decision-makers who count.
The organization was specifically formed as a 501(c)5 organization in order to represent agriculture’s perspective on advanced biofuel development to Congressional and Executive Branch decision-makers, from crop cultivation to process R&D.
With a new Administration taking office in January 2009 and oil prices staying over $100/barrel, action on energy initiatives will be hot and heavy in next two years. “This is the time to lay the ground work for the new Congress,” said Joanne. “We want to make sure farmers, foresters, processors, and researchers will be part of the conversation on everything from R&D funding to Federal land use policy,” she continued, “Development of advanced biofuels is not only essential to meeting the challenge of ‘20 by 20’ but more important, is critical to rebuilding the US economy.”
Advanced Biofuels USA is a Maryland nonprofit organization with a pending application for IRS 501(c)5 agricultural organization status. Its purpose is to promote the interests of persons engaged in the art and science of cultivating land, harvesting crops or aquatic resources, or similar pursuits in order to develop, produce and market advanced biofuels; to improve advanced biofuels crops and products; to promote research and establishment of demonstration projects regarding the provision and benefits of advanced biofuels; to recommend legislation favorable to persons engaged in agriculture related to biofuels; and to promote public understanding, acceptance, and use of advanced biofuels.
