Adventures in Voicemail

When you sign up at http://www.privatephone.com, powered by Netzero, you get a free phone number that goes straight to your private voicemail. Their claim to fame is that they provide you with a phone number you can give anyone yet keep all the privacy you want.

Singer and actress Christina Milian endorses the website by saying her number is “so private” she “can make it public”, and it is indeed listed right beneath her picture. At first I thought to myself, why would I need a phone line with a voicemail when I have a cell phone that never leaves my side? But I started thinking about different ways to use it and came up with quite a few reasons to join the “privatephone” family.

Use it to keep the telemarketers at bay. In this day and age we have ways to block telemarketers such as the “Do Not Call” Registry but this does not include companies you have an established relationship with or companies you give your number to, such as when you sign up for a discount club or credit card. Even when making online purchases, a phone number is usually required. With privatephone.com you give them your voicemail number and then you can screen the calls.

Use it to make money! When you list an item for sale in your local paper, or even an online auction and you don’t necessarily want your phone ringing off the hook, much less having to give the same information out over and over again, you can leave it all on an automated message and then only the truly interested people with leave you their contact information. You don’t have to waste any time

Personally, I like the fact that you can choose your area code. Having a home based business, it’s convenient to be able to have extra area codes so that more clients can call us without having to dial long distance. It's also simple. You sign up, then record your greeting , and you are done. Some more great features are you can check your voicemail online (and see the caller ID that way), there’s no equipment required, and you can also choose to be alerted on your cell phone or emailed when you get a voicemail. The best part is it’s FREE. So check it out.
