FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE -- BALKAN BAND, CINDER CONK, TO PLAY AT CAFE NOLA
Balkan music is the vibrant, colorful sound of Roma (Gypsy), Yiddish and Eastern European culture, known for it's haunting allure to even unfamiliar ears.
From the same musical family as the Luminescent Orchestrii and Fishtank Ensemble, Balkan power-duo Cinder Conk performs in Frederick at Cafe Nola on Thursday, April 14, 2011 at 9:30pm as part of their debut CD release tour. (Full details below.)
As Slavic Soul Party's Peter Stan said after a recent co-bill, "these guys are really good!" In the past year, Cinder Conk has played nonstop, including the Golden Fest and Barbes in Brooklyn, Balkan Night in Concord, Mass, a recent tour with Fishtank Ensemble. In May, they will travel to Boston to share the stage with the legendary Petar Ralchev band.
Accordion player Matt Schreiber recently spent several years in Europe studying with some of the brightest lights in Eastern European accordion music. While there, he toured with sailing circus troupe Compagnie Aquanaut, and composed for films in five different countries.
Double bass player Xar Adelberg is the founding member of the Maine Composers Collective. She's spent the last four years on the road with Gypsy jazz trio Ameranouche, prior to which she was immersed in the study of modern lunatic-fringe/avant-garde and free jazz, and also spent time touring in the UK with “pop-punk nightmare”, Five Star Loser.
