Christmas List or Grocery List
By: Donna Worthy

The Christmas season is very different for all of us. It brings out the good the bad and the ugly in so many different ways. With only about a week left before we get to tear into our gift, there is a mother in Western Charles County that is hoping she will be able to provide food for her son this week, much less a Christmas gift. Her name is Treva and she is 34 years old. Her wish this year for Christmas is to simply be able to eat and sleep with a roof over her head. Up until recently she was doing a great job and holding down the fort as a single mom. However, is August her car was repossessed and in September she lost her job and just last month she received an eviction notice. She is now working part-time at a grocery store but that doesn’t hardly make ends meet.

The first thing people say when they hear a story like this one is “ Has she ask for help from the county”. YES, she has and several times she has been turned down. There simply isn’t any money to give out. The well has run dry and funding is null.

LifeStyles director, Sandy Washington says that the agency does it’s best to help disadvantaged families by providing them counseling, food and shelter but there is only so much to go around. The economy is so bad in this part of town it seems that just about every one wants a piece of the pie. She says that she has seen people who are considered veterans at their jobs and have been there for 15-20 years walk in one day and be told that they no longer have a position. What jobs are available are offering minimum wage and that’s doesn’t help much at all. Chances are if you are living paycheck to paycheck, loosing one day’s pay will throw you completely out of the ball game.

LifeStyles graciously provided meals to over 2000 people on Thanksgiving day but due to the lack of food donations they are not sure how far the meals will stretch on Christmas.

Bailouts for the big car dealers and other such organizations are being handed out left and right. So one has to ask, what happens to the little people? Where is the bailout for them?

Charles County Children’s Aid Society in Waldorf is also facing hard times. This is an organization that has always given out school supplies and toys among other things to children in need with very little hassle. This year may be a little different. Toys are only going to be given out to those who can prove that they are in dire need of help.

Desperate times call for desperate measures. The Charles County police officer that I spoke with on Black Friday said that it’s not the malls and discount stores that are in need of surveillance and monitoring this year. It’s the grocery stores who seem to have a all time high rate of theft.

I realize it is hard for just about everyone this time of year but if you are able to donate just one small bag of canned goods or maybe one toy to a toy drive, please do so. Five or ten dollars may make a huge difference in someone’s Christmas.
