Does Change Equal Death
By: Donna Worthy

I recently read a novel called “The Secret Between Us“. There is a part of the book when the father says to his adult daughter that he believes the human life span is what it is because of our inability to adjust to change. I never really thought of it that way but it did make me stop and think about the possibility.. I can remember being a young child and my great grandmother would be absolutely enraged in anger if I sat on the couch and watched TV with a soda in the middle of the day. To her it was considered being lazy and a waste of time. I used to think she was crazy and had nothing better to do with her time than to sit around and think of things to gripe and moan about. In my mind I was doing what all children my age did and there was nothing abnormal, lazy or mischievous about it . Looking back on things now I can totally understand her frustrations. She was born in 1902 and married with a child at the young age of sixteen! For her to see me “chillin out” on the sofa at the same age she was changing diapers and being a full time wife and mother must have been mind boggling to her. When I look at my two teenage daughters with a cell phone in their hand more than 90% of their waking hours, sending text messages as if it were a life or death situation, it sends volts of frustration through my body at lightening speed! It seems that they literally do NOTHING without their phone attached to their body. When I was their age a cell phone was this big clunky device that was kept in you car in the case of an emergency. It was rare to see anyone actually talking on one and it wasn’t in the least bit appealing to me. It is amazing at how far things have come in such a short amount of time!

If I am blessed to make it to the ripe old age of eighty I will more than likely go crazy with frustrations over trying to keep up with the times. I suppose when you look at the time we spend here on earth it is short in human years but unbelievably advanced when you think about all of the things that change and "become" within that time span.

I don't consider myself to be old by any means but it still amazes me to hear my daughter say that I don't "get it" or how different things are. It's when I talk to my mom that I realize that maybe they are a little different than what I see through my own eyes. Although I wouldn’t quite agree with the fact that we pass away based on our inability to keep up with advanced technology and other things that change over time, I would venture to say that perhaps we are less inclined to continue to change with the times which is a sign for our minds and bodies to slow down and eventually pass. In any case I think that technology and the various changes of the world are at some point and time in our lives our own doing. That being said, it is all a part of life and in my opinion God’s plan for each of us.
