NATIONAL CANCER PREVENTION STUDY-3 KICKOFF: JANUARY 17

FOR FREDERICK COUNTY AT MONOCACY VALLEY CHURCH

American Cancer Society seeks to understand genetics, lifestyle, environmental factors that cause cancer through a 20 - 30 year landmark study

Goal is 600 participants in Frederick County, http://www.CPS3FrederickCounty.org

WHAT: What if you could prevent even one family member from hearing the words, “You have cancer?” The American Cancer Society (ACS) is seeking cancer fighters in Frederick County to participate in Cancer Prevention Study-3 (CPS-3), a historic, nationwide study to help researchers better understand the genetic, environmental and lifestyle factors that cause or prevent cancer. The famous CPS-1 established the link between smoking and lung cancer in the 1950s. Recent CPS-2 findings have linked obesity to cancer risk.

KICKOFF EVENT and PRESS CONFERENCE:

Thursday, January 17, 2013, 6:30 p.m., Monocacy Valley Church

9861 Old National Pike, Ijamsville, MD, 21754

KICKOFF SPEAKERS:

Paul Frey, MC, Vice President, Chamber of Commerce of Frederick County

Dr. Mark Soberman, Medical Director, Frederick Memorial Hospital Cancer Therapy Center and Frederick County Cancer Liaison Physician for Commission on Cancer

Amanda Changuris, Frederick Memorial Hospital Marketing and Communications Specialist

Nancy Nathanson, ACS Volunteer and Deacon at Monocacy Valley Church

Champions and supporters of the American Cancer Society are coming together to kick off the enrollment drive for CPS-3 in Carroll County. Champions are community residents – including cancer survivors, caregivers or those honoring a loved one who has battled cancer – who have volunteered to help drive CPS-3 awareness. At the kickoff, they will learn about CPS-3 and receive the tools to educate the community and recruit participants.

Enrollment takes place in Frederick County from March 19 – 23, 2013 in partnership with Hollow Creek Golf Course, Monocacy Valley Church, Frederick Memorial Hospital, St. Paul’s Church, and Sport & Health. The goal is to enroll 600 participants that week. Approximately 185,000 Americans have already enrolled in CPS-3, however, the national goal is a diverse population of 300,000 Americans. Maryland has already enrolled approximately 2,100 participants in other areas of the state. For locations, dates and to register for enrollment, see http://www.CPS3FrederickCounty.org.

Study enrollee requirements are:

  • Men and women ages 30 to 65 who have never been diagnosed with cancer (except for basal or squamous cell skin carcinoma)
  • Provide a waist measurement and give a small blood sample
  • Complete a comprehensive survey and follow-up surveys every few years.

“This is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to participate in lifesaving cancer research,” said Gloria Jetter Crockett. “In order to reach the enrollment targets, we need passionate people who are committed to fighting cancer. While the American Cancer Society has been conducting these types of studies for decades, their world-class research department can only study new and emerging cancer risks if members of the community are willing to become involved.”
