CALM, Inc. Announces
Annual Frederick “Shining Star” 2012
CALM, Inc is proud to announce the 3rd annual Frederick “Shining Star” 2012 competition
with some new features. The annual fundraising event, co-sponsored by Frederick Community
College, benefits CALM, Inc ─ Frederick’s community mediation & conflict resolution center.
Your Voice Can Make A Difference!
Each year "Shining Star" just gets bigger and better. CALM is excited to present this year, by
popular request, not just one Shining Star, but four. There will now be one in each age category:
10-14 years, 15-18 years, 19-25 years, and 26 years and up. Auditions for ages 19-25 years and
26 years and up will be held Thursday, September 6th 6:30-9:00 PM. Ages 10-14 years and 15-
18 years will be held Sunday, September 9th 2:00-5:00 PM, All auditions will be at the Bernard
W. Brown Community Center located at 629 N. Market Street in Frederick. Contestants are
to bring a CD of background music for two 3-5 minute songs they have prepared to sing that
showcase their voices. Contestants will be evaluated by professional vocalists and musicians
on musicality, star quality presentation, and community spirit. Winners of the contest will be
announced at the grand finale event on Sunday, October 14th, 5:00-7:00 PM. The grand finale
event will take place at Frederick Community College’s Jack B. Kussmaul Theater with live
performance, entertainment, and food.
At the grand finale, all contestants will be prepared to perform their winner’s song and be
part of a contestant group performance. There will be three rehearsals for the group prior to
the finale. The contestants will not only receive some great vocal tips from the judges, they
will have the opportunity to work with a professional stage performance coach and learn tips
they are guaranteed to be able to use in future musical endeavors. Another new, fun feature is
the “Audience Choice” awards. All contestants in each age category will have their short video
and biography on CALM’s web site and Facebook page for voting purposes. Contestants will
be competing for cash prizes. There is a registration fee to cover administrative expenses for
the auditions. Pre-registration fee is $5. At the door the fee is $10. Contact CALM for pre-
registration and instructions by email: .
CALM, Inc. has successfully impacted hundreds of community members each year by reducing
neighborhood strife, mitigating overcrowded courtrooms, addressing youth
