Racism: Why is it such a big problem?
By: Brittany Ray
Racism. What is it? Well the definition for racism is a belief or doctrine that inherent differences among the various human races determine cultural or individual achievement, usually involving the idea that one's own race is superior and has the right to rule others. (This was taken from dictionary.com). Why do people become racists, anyways? What makes people hate on others so much to discriminate them for who they are?
Well racism is everywhere in the world today. Recently, Barack Obama was elected as President-elect. It is said that the reason why so many people had voted for him was because he is black or at least half. What does that tell you about the people in America today? Why can’t you vote for someone that you believe stands for the right thing instead of their gender, race, religion, etc.?
There also have been many accounts of racism in our world history. In World War II, when Hitler became dictator of Germany, he believed that Jewish people were responsible for why Germany was doing so poorly (the depression, involvement in World War I, etc.). Adolf Hitler hated the Jews so much that he put them in concentration camps, which brutally killed the Jews and made them suffer. It tore families apart and killed on average over 9,000,000 people. This was known as the Holocaust.
After World War II had ended, because of our misfits with Japan over Pearl Harbor and the atomic bombing, we had become conscious of the Japanese that were living in America at the time. We were afraid that they would be telling Japan our secrets. So what did America do? We put all people we suspected of being Japanese in internment camps, which were similar to concentration camps only we did not kill or torture them. They stayed in little rooms with even more little privacy. These people lost their jobs, homes, belongings, and even family. Most of those people were American citizens.
What does racism cause? It causes people to die, to suffer from being different. It is a horrible thing that I think will never stop. People have such hatred against others because they may look different, or sound different, or are just different over all. You can call them freaks and you can call them weird, but they can’t help how they were born. If your one of those people that do make fun of others because they are different, put yourself in their shoes. Think about how much it would hurt you to be made fun of and ridiculed almost every day, if not every day.
When people say the word “hate” is a very strong word, they aren’t lying. Hatred can cause so many things. Just like Hitler hated the Jews and we Americans hated the Japanese, do you see what that caused? But because of the United Nations, we now know a term that can prevent things like that happening again. It is called World Peace.
So think about this: What can you do to help prevent racism? If you hear someone saying hate, tell them it is much better to use the word “dislike”. If you hear someone ridiculing someone else because they are different, ask them how they would feel if someone was doing that to them? It only takes one person to make a difference, and that person could be you.
