Radar has been used in our world for over 80 years. It originally began in the 1900’s when engineers invented simple uni-directional ranging devices. These radar systems were first being used in the opening of World War II. At first, they were very big systems. But by the end of World War II, the USA deployed systems that could fit in a semi-trailer. During World War II, they used these radar systems to increase integrated air defense capability. This was one thing that was an advantage to the Allies against the Axis Powers; German Luftwaffe (German Air Patrol). The German people did not appreciate the system radars being used.
But what is radar? Radar is a system that uses electromagnetic waves to identify the range, altitude, direction, or speed of both moving and fixed objects such as aircraft, ships, motor vehicles, weather formations, and terrain. The term “radar” became an acronym for radio detection and ranging in 1941. It was originally called RDF (Radio Detection Finder) in the United Kingdom. Radar has a transmitter that emits either microwaves or radio waves that are reflected by the target and detected by the receiver, usually in the same place as the transmitter. Although the signal can be weak, it can also be modified. This enables radar to be able to detect other things, like sound and visible light. It has very many uses and is used widely in military positions and even in police detection of speeding traffic.
Radar has many components. The main component is the transmitter. The transmitter generates the radio signal. Another component is the waveguide, which links the transmitter with the antenna. Then it has a duplexer, which serves as a switch between the transmitter and the antenna or the receiver for the signal when the antenna is used in both situations. Then there is a receiver. The last component is software, which controls all those devices and the antenna to perform the radar scan.
There are many different radar systems that serve a purpose in every situation. The radar systems that are used for weather intentions would not be the same radars used in military combat. Some detection radars would include Early Warning radar systems, Ground Control Intercept, Airborne Early Warning, and Over-the-Horizon radar. Some threat radars would include Private Approach Radar systems and Fire Control systems. Missile-Guidance systems would include Air-to-Air missile, Air-to-Surface missile, and Surface-to-Surface missile systems.
Some radar systems that would be used on battlefield would be Synthetic Aperture Radar systems, Perimeter Surveillance Radar systems, and Red Dawn Radar systems. Air Traffic control systems would include Air traffic Control Radars, Radar Altimeter Systems, and Terrain-Following Radar systems. Radar systems are even used in space. There are space-tracking systems and Range Instrumentation Systems.
Radar has been apart of our economy for a long time and is a very important part in what we do everyday. It helps our lives a whole lot easier and gives our country a big advantage against other countries. Without radar, we would probably not be at where we are today.
