Consulting, Coaching and Training for Nonprofits

Frederick, MD, September 26, 2016: On June 30, Michelle Nusum-Smith celebrated her sixth year running her nonprofit consulting practice “on the side” by taking a leap of faith. She resigned her full-time position in the Frederick Community College Foundation to become a fulltime consultant.

Nusum-Smith started The Word Woman LLC in 2010 when after over ten years in the nonprofit sector she began receiving requests for grant writing support. Since grant writing was her only service at the time, the name “The Word Woman” made sense. Little did she know the company would expand to offer much more. Over the years, Nusum-Smith added more services and today, the self-proclaimed “Do-Gooder who helps do-gooders to do good” provides consulting, coaching and training to nonprofits, government agencies, social enterprises, and those starting a nonprofit.

Nusum-Smith says she has been in overdrive since leaving her job. In less than 45 days, she has already facilitated a board training, conducted multiple public training events under her Pay-What-You-Can (PWYC) Nonprofit Training Program, guided several individuals through individual coaching sessions, launched a group coaching program, finalized a strategic planning process she led for a state agency, and wrote a grant proposal for an advocacy organization in Tanzania, Africa! At the local level, Nusum-Smith has partnered with a Frederick nonprofit on her PWYC Nonprofit Training Program, which allows attendees to reserve a seat for a small fee and pay what they can at the training based on the value they receive and their ability to pay.

“I have worked with organizations, large and small, and I know when it comes to budgeting training and professional development, nonprofits usually have little or no funds allocated to those budget lines. This program makes accessing training a lot easier and is my way of giving back,” she said of the PWYC training program.
