Worth the Cause
By: Chelsea Milam

I don't volunteer. I have before, and it does make a difference. Throughout the past five years of my life, my jobs are where I've found I make a difference. There is more than one way to give to a cause. My cause is humanity. I believe in people. I believe that if you can help them to realize that everything will be okay, it may just give them enough faith in themselves to allow it to be so. If you give someone that one extra chance, they might prove the world wrong and do right by it instead of taking advantage. Expressing humanity is not about what you gain from it; it’s about what you give towards the cause. Not in money, not in hours documented. Though both of these ways of contribution are well worth their efforts, I know that they are not the only way to give towards a cause.

Make a difference in someone’s life by telling them you love seeing them when they come into your work. Tell them why you enjoy their presence. I work in the mental health field, and my present is the feeling I get when I hear the reaction in someone’s voice when I am honest and sincere in the words which I say to or the advice I give them. Encourage those you know going through a rough patch. Tell them what you believe; pass your faith in life and the world on to them. I believe that things happen for a reason, and while right now that reason may not be apparent in time it will reveal itself. I tell others in turmoil this. I tell them I don’t know exactly what they’re going through but in my experience things work themselves out or teach us how to do so ourselves. It may just be the gift they needed more than money or happiness…I believe that if you build people up, they learn to help steady themselves so they don’t fall as hard or as far the next time around. They make their own change; possibly the one they needed to make in order to give their life a more positive and meaningful direction.

Give of yourself is the famous expression. Build real relationships with those that surround your life, and they as well as yourself will be forever changed. Inspiration comes from believing in yourself, and that comes from faith. There are many opinions about how faith is obtained, but one thing remains constant; it starts from within. I learned when I was 18 that age doesn’t matter in helping those around you. I worked with teenagers in a group home, some of them just one year younger than I. I guided them; I gave them not only discipline, but trust and sincerity. I was honest, open, and humorous with them. People trust people when they realize that you respect them enough to be sincere. I taught them that things can be easier if they end in laughter. I made a difference to those kids that sticks with me still today. I suppose they made a difference in me too. Helping them find their paths helped me realize that no matter what the job may be, the opportunity is always the same: Be kind, sincere, listen, be receptive, and give of yourself. That is the greatest gift of all, for people are changed by this kind of love. My cause is humanity because it helps us all to become a little more human.
