You may kiss the bride...
By: Jack Severens

So.....here's an interesting thing that I was pondering.  Pondering (musing) at 1:17 a.m. gets rather interesting at this this hour as you can imagine.  The Bible refers to sex being something to be shared between married persons.  So, in Biblical times what was marriage?  What is the context?

Was marriage a ceremony?

Was it a matter of two people coming together and asking God to bless their love and their union?

Was it a matter of expressing your love for each other before family and friends?

Does it necessarily have to involve a minister?  What was a minister in the Bible?  Of course, he needed to be able to butcher animals and burn them.  So, if we use a butcher from Harris Teeter does that count?  What if we use a pastor / priest and he doesn't decend from the tribe of Levi?  Does it still count? What if he is a decendant of say Dan or Reuben?

Does the only acceptable form of marriage involve a certificate from the State?  Is that what God says he requires for a marriage to be acceptable in His eyes?  A certificate from the State?  What if we do get a certificate from the state and it was forged?  Or printed on 20 lb. paper with 300 brightness rather than 25 lb. paper with 500 brightness?

Is marriage more of a spiritual thing with no ritual necessarily required?

Or is the ceremony what God requires?  and what is it that truly makes the ceremony?  Is it when the cake is cut? Does cake make the ceremony?  Or is it the champagne?  The first dance?  Or is it the words that the minister says when he says "you may kiss the bride"  After all, a man saying "you may kiss the bride" that is pretty legit and powerful stuff isn't it?

Maybe you can ask these questions for me the next time you are at church.   Maybe they can clarify for you what really makes marriage.  Because if it's cake that God requires I'm down with that . For that matter I would be willing to go out, eat cake, toast champagne, have a first dance AND have a jew decending from the Tribe of Levi say "you may kiss the bride" .
