He is regularly seen on the courts working with anyone who wants to learn,” Kathy said, highlighting Silberman’s dedication to promoting pickleball in Frederick.

Another local, Joe Leonard, is a pickleball instructor in Frederick. “We finally got our own dedicated courts last year in downtown Frederick,” he said, commenting on how much the community has grown recently. “Slowly but surely we're catching up.”

Wm Talley Recreation Center - With four indoor courts, permanent lines, and portable nets available, you won't have to worry about any equipment at this facility. You only need to pay a one-time fee and you're ready to go!

This venue also offers a fitness center, gymnasium, and numerous meeting rooms. Visitors can also benefit from internet access throughout the building.

Trinity Rec. Center - Trinity Rec Center is a great location for a game on a budget. This venue offers three indoor pickleball courts with a wooden surface, all for an affordable one-time fee. Permanent lines are drawn on the court and portable nets are included for each court.

This venue offers many extra amenities, such as on-site bathrooms, court lights, parking, picnic tables, and a water fountain.

Monocacy Village Park Pickleball Courts (recently opened) - At this venue, you can enjoy pic k leball in a brand-new location. The City of Frederick recently approved the refurbishment of an old tennis court at Monocacy Village Park into a pickleball court—the first dedicated outdoor pickleball court in the city.

The project is fully funded by a grant from the Department of Natural Resources, making it a great addition to the local parks and playgrounds. It has everything you need, with six dedicated outdoor courts, permanent lines, and nets for playing. The courts are hard-surfaced and lighted for play at all hours.

In the late 90s, Craig Shipp was just an ordinary resident of Frederick County, Maryland. But he had a passion for local businesses and community events that he believed deserved more attention. He knew that many people were missing out on the amazing small businesses and unique events that were taking place right in their own backyard. So, he decided to take matters into his own hands and create a platform that would promote local businesses and events.

And so, in 1999, Frederick.com was born. At first, it was just a simple website that showcased local businesses and events with a few photos and some brief descriptions. But as the years went on, Frederick.com grew and evolved into a powerful marketing tool for local businesses.

Craig was a tireless promoter of local businesses, attending every event he could and taking thousands of photos along the way. He was a familiar face at local festivals, farmers markets, and community events, and he was always armed with his trusty camera. Like any bona fide classic, the Fritchie has stood the test of time. This years Fritchie at The Great Frederick Fairgrounds will be the 92nd running of the event.

It’s a Fourth of July tradition in Frederick. But when it started, the race wasn’t even held on the Fourth. The Fritchie ran Memorial Day. And back then, it was called the Delphey Brothers Classic, promoted by J. Paul and Chester Delphey.Of course, for fans, the names that mattered most belonged to the racers. My favorite, considering how hot it usually is during this event, belongs to 1971 winner Royal Sherbert.Other names, while not as catchy, loomed large in racing. Legends like William Minnick. The Wilmington, Del. native burst onto the Fritchie scene by winning the 1923 race, but his biggest moment came four years later.On Memorial Day 1927, Minnick set the world record for a 21 cubic inch motor on a half-mile dirt track. He zoomed his Harley around the oval twice in one minute and three seconds.

Everyone but Art Pechar must have been thrilled. Pechar was the overshadowed soul who actually won the main event that day after Minnick took a spill fighting for the lead.Records come and go. And through the years, motorcycles benefited from all sorts of technological advances. But those old time racers had that one essential ingredient riders still use today: boldness. Men weren’t the only bold ones gunning around the Frederick Fairgrounds track, either. Eventually, women competed. One of those pioneers was Michelle DiSalvo, a Modesto, Cal. native who raced here in 1999. Speaking of pioneers, Bob Boutwell qualifies. In 1953, he became the first Fritchie winner to ride a Triumph bike. He ended up winning three straight Fritchie races — a rare feat. For those who never got to see Boutwell in person at the Fritchie, don’t fret. He’ll be the grand marshal at Tuesday’s race, a nice link to the event’s rich past. Boutwell, from Baltimore, was one of the few Marylanders who won main events at the Fritchie Classic. Another was Cockeysville’s Rodney Farris — who died just before the 1995 Fritchie Classic from injuries he suffered in another race.

Winners often hailed from Pennsylvania, Ohio and Virginia, and some came from even farther away.

Then again, Petrali was known to travel pretty fast, at least on his bike. He won the Fritchie in 1935 and 1936, showing why he was regarded as the finest racer of his era.

Back then, the Fritchie Classic drew huge crowds, and they even played a role in the outcome. In the hotly contested 1954 amateur race, judges said Bud Mertholdt placed second in front of Stuart Dayhoff. “But the fans lodged such a vigorous protest that the management voted second money to both Dayhoff and Bertholdt,” the News-Post reported. When I say where Fritchie racers come from, I usually just mention their hometowns. But way back when, ethnic backgrounds were also given.

Freddy Toscani — winner in 1937 and 1938 — was described in the paper as a “a swarthy little Italian” from Garfield, N.J. And when Toscani fell in 1939, it was to Lester Hillbish, who was known as the Reading Dutchman. That didn’t necessarily mean he was an avid reader — he just hailed from Reading, Pa. And as a testament to this event’s longevity, some grew from virtual kids to middle-age men while racing the Fritchie. Take Steve Morehead. When Morehead won in 1975, he was a 19-year-old rookie. When he won it for the last time in 1997, he was 41.

Like the Fritchie Classic, he stood the test of time.

I shot the Thurmont Halloween In The Park 2015 event with my Sony A7sII and the 24-70FE lens at f4, hand-held (with the exception of the standup clips of the managers talking into the Shure BETA 57A mic) using auto focus. Many clips were over ISO 20,000. It was very dark. Overall I'm pleased with the camera's performance at low-light events.

I was diagnosed at the age of 19 with a rare kidney cancer known as HLRCC, which currently has no known cure.

I established Driven to Cure, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, to help others and raise awareness for rare kidney cancers.

My Diagnosis

I was diagnosed at Massachusetts General Hospital on May 15th, 2015 at the end of my freshman year at the University of New Hampshire. I was told that my Stage 4 rare kidney cancer known as HLRCC would not respond to any of the approved cancer treatments available today.

Fortunately, the doctors at Mass General Hospital referred me to the National Cancer Institutes at NIH , where researchers have had some success with an experimental treatment program for my type of cancer. I was number 42 in my first trial treatment program. The doctors at NCI/NIH have had success prolonging my life so I have been able to continue to participate in the next generation of new trial drugs, some of which I have been the first to try as a volunteer.

In April of 2017, I qualified for a new HLRCC trial at the Yale Smilow Cancer Center . In 2018, I moved to another new trial at the Georgetown Lombardi Cancer Center in close collaboration with NCI/NIH and Yale. At the beginning of 2019, I am back at NCI/NIH volunteering in my 8th trial. Without the incredible collaboration between National Cancer Institute at NIH, the Yale Smilow Cancer Center, and the Georgetown Lombardi Cancer Center, I would not be alive today.

Turning a negative, into a positive

After being diagnosed at the age of 19 with a rare kidney cancer known as HLRCC , which currently has no known cure, I established Driven to Cure, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization to help others.

As the dust began to settle from my finding out about the cancer, I remember sitting down with my dad, as the clock was ticking. He stood there and asked a simple question. “Andrew” he said, “what are your life goals?” I thought for a moment with this new lens on life, looked at him, and chuckled “Well I need to own my dream car sometime in my life.” But my dad didn’t take it as a joke…Three weeks after being diagnosed, I found myself sinking in to the soft leather of my very own brand new Nissan GTR. It was more than a dream come true.

My GTR has proven to be the closest thing I have to a cure for my cancer. Driving the GTR has become a tremendous outlet for me. The places I have gone, the people I have met, and the passions I have developed just because of this gift have become the best medicine available. Within days of driving the car off the lot I found myself attending local car shows, answering lots of questions about HLRCC , and creating new friendships with people of all different backgrounds. As folks started talking, my story began spreading and within a month people started to recognize me and why I had this incredible vehicle. It was clear my situation had a big impact on others and I suddenly found myself experiencing an immense outpouring of love and support. It was then I realized that the vehicle of my dreams was also the vehicle which gave me the opportunity to make a difference; to do something bigger than myself. That is why I am here, writing this story.

I created Driven to Cure to join two of my biggest passions, cars and cancer awareness, and to serve something far greater than myself. According to the American Cancer Society, kidney cancer affects 31,000 Americans annually, killing 11,900 of them. I was told at the time of my diagnosis that I might survive a year or more. I have chosen to fight this horrible disease and to help others in this process. Driven to Cure’s goal is to bring awareness and additional research funding to find a cure soon for rare kidney cancer diseases, including the development of the next generation of drugs to help others. Your generous donation will help to accomplish this goal and will make a difference in the lives of children, young adults, and their families affected by these diseases. Since the founding of Driven to Cure 2016, we have raised $400,000 for the research of rare kidney cancers like HLRCC. We hope to reach $600,000 by the end of 2019 and with your help we will!

Hey guys! There are three hiking videos below. In the first video, I went for a hike at Catoctin Mountain Park starting from the visitor center to the Wolf Rock and then onto Chimney Rock. It was a challenging hike. Once I got up to the famous rocks, I did some hoop dancing. Nature allows me to really feel my flow. This is beauty of flow arts, it is a very natural form of beauty and fitness. I'm new to hooping, I try to incorporate my bellydancing and exotic hip movements into my dance. In the second video, I hiked to the Thurmont Vista, it was a beautiful view. In the third video, I hiked from the Visitor Center over to Cunningham Falls. By the way, Cunningham Falls is in the State Park and the other hikes mentioned above were in the National Park. I really enjoy hiking the trails on Catoctin Mountain. Stay tuned for some more videos.

August 4th Dynamic Automotive 11th Annual Benefit Car Show benefiting Second Chances Garage and hosted by Golden Gears Car Club. This annual event is a fun time for the whole family that helps to raise funds and awareness for a great cause. Second Chances Garage is a nonprofit organization that provides “second chances” for individuals and families in need with safe reliable transportation. The money that is raised goes to fund the programs at Second Chances Garage and help to offset the expense of low cost repairs right here in our Frederick area. In the last two years we have been able to raise almost $15,000. This year our goal is $10,000 and with your help, we can achieve it!

How it all began…from Paul's website...

I started Great Stuff about 28 years ago, selling antique trunks which I refinished completely. (I still have many of these trunks.) About 12 years ago, I started buying different kinds of merchandise to sell.

One day, a friend asked me if I was interested in helping him purchase a large number of antique wagons that he was to have shipped from Europe. Fortunately, I decided to do it and from there started my current practice of buying large quantities of unique antiques from all over the world.

One of the ways I sold my merchandise was by hitting the road and displaying my wares at antique shows all around the country. My display was noticeably different from the others because I made sure to bring – you guessed it – large quantities. At one of the shows, some folks from Country Living happened by and took notice of my display.

They mentioned that it was interesting enough to mention in an upcoming issue of the magazine, and took a number of photographs. When the photographs were shown to the Editor, she found them so intriguing that she decided to run a large, multi-page write-up of Great Stuff by Paul in the March 1999 issue. The rest is history.

The phone rang off the hook, sometimes ringing a couple of hundred times a day. If I didn’t really have Great Stuff, the story would have ended there. But as all those people who called and checked us out found, we DO have Great Stuff, and lots of it! Great Stuff by Paul was featured in many other magazines, and continued to grow.

James Steinberg, D.O. is board certified in orthopaedic surgery and specializes in sports medicine. (video below) His fellowship in Sports Medicine and Traumatology makes him an invaluable asset to athletes and others with serious musculoskeletal injuries. He has special interests in reconstructive procedures of the knee, including joint replacement surgery as well as baseball injuries to the elbow and shoulder. Dr. Steinberg is currently an orthopaedic physician for the Frederick Keys (Single A Affiliates of the Baltimore Orioles). He has published numerous papers in orthopaedic literature and presented at numerous conferences on various topics, including a new state of the art technique to repair fractures of the femur and a new technique to reduce blood loss during surgery.

The American Civil War (also known by other names) was a civil war fought in the United States from 1861 to 1865, between the North (the Union) and the South (the Confederacy). The Civil War began primarily as a result of the long-standing controversy over the enslavement of black people. War broke out in April 1861 when secessionist forces attacked Fort Sumter in South Carolina shortly after Abraham Lincoln had been inaugurated as the President of the United States. The loyalists of the Union in the North, which also included some geographically western and southern states, proclaimed support for the Constitution. They faced secessionists of the Confederate States in the South, who advocated for states' rights in order to uphold slavery.

Of the 34 U.S. states in February 1861, seven Southern slave states were declared by partisans to have seceded from the country, and the so-called Confederate States of America was organized in rebellion against the U.S. constitutional government. The Confederacy grew to control at least a majority of territory in eleven states, and it claimed the additional states of Kentucky and Missouri by assertions from native secessionists fleeing Union authority. These states were given full representation in the Confederate Congress throughout the Civil War. The two remaining 'slave' states, Delaware and Maryland, were invited to join the Confederacy, but nothing substantial developed due to intervention by federal troops.

The Confederate states were never diplomatically recognized as a joint entity by the government of the United States, nor by that of any foreign country. The states that remained loyal to the U.S. were known as the Union.[f] The Union and the Confederacy quickly raised volunteer and conscription armies that fought mostly in the South over the course of four years. Intense combat left 620,000 to 750,000 people dead, more than the number of U.S. military deaths in all other wars combined.

The war effectively ended April 9, 1865, when General Robert E. Lee surrendered to General Ulysses S. Grant at the Battle of Appomattox Court House. Confederate generals throughout the southern states followed suit, the last surrender on land occurring June 23. Much of the South's infrastructure was destroyed, especially the transportation systems. The Confederacy collapsed, slavery was abolished, and four million black slaves were freed. During the Reconstruction era that followed the war, national unity was slowly restored, the national government expanded its power, and civil and political rights were granted to freed black slaves through amendments to the Constitution and federal legislation. Thurmont is a town in Frederick County, Maryland, [United States. The population was 6,170 at the 2010 census. The town is located in the northern part of Frederick County (north of Frederick, the county seat), approximately ten miles from the Pennsylvania border, along U.S. Highway 15. It is very close to Cunningham Falls State Park and Catoctin Mountain Park, the latter of which contains the presidential retreat of Camp David. Thurmont is also home to Catoctin Colorfest, an arts and crafts festival that draws in about 125,000 people each autumn.

Rocky Ridge is an unincorporated community in Frederick County, Maryland, United States.[1] The name "Rocky Ridge" likely refers to a ridge of ironstone which runs through the area.

The Rocky Ridge area was settled by several families by the mid-18th century, at which time it was known as Ogleton, after the Ogle family. It has spent most of its life as a "crossroads village," being centered on the intersection of the roads that today are Maryland Route 76 and Maryland Route 77. It was a railroad depot in the latter half of the 19th century; the Western Maryland Railway reached Rocky Ridge in 1870, and the Emmitsburg Railroad connected with it there in 1875. Highlighting the importance of the railroads in its existence, the Rocky Ridge stretch of Maryland Route 76 is known as Motters Station Road after Joshua Motter, president of the Emmitsburg Railroad.

Rocky Ridge had two active church congregations by the mid-19th century, and got its own post office in 1870.

Old Mill Road Bridge was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1979. Loys Station Covered Bridge, located between Rocky Ridge and Thurmont, was listed in 1978.

The town is known for the "Big Slide," a forty-foot tall wooden slide, built by volunteers in 1950. The slide is located in Mount Tabor Park, a park founded by Mount Tabor Church in the early 20th century and still administered by the church today. The penny-farthing, also known as a high wheel, high wheeler and ordinary, is a type of bicycle with a large front wheel and a much smaller rear wheel. It was popular after the boneshaker until the development of the safety bicycle in the 1880s.[1] It was the first machine to be called a "bicycle".

Although the name "penny-farthing" is now the most common, it was probably not used until the machines were nearly outdated; the first recorded print reference is from 1891 in Bicycling News. It comes from the British penny and farthing coins, one much larger than the other, so that the side view resembles a penny leading a farthing. For most of their reign, they were simply known as "bicycles". In the late 1890s, the name "ordinary" began to be used, to distinguish them from the emerging safety bicycles;[5] this term and "hi-wheel" (and variants) are preferred by many modern enthusiasts.

In 1869, Eugène Meyer, a Frenchman, invented the High-Bicycle design and fashioned the wire-spoke tension wheel.[8] Around 1870, English inventor James Starley, described as the father of the bicycle industry, and others, began producing bicycles based on the French boneshaker but with front wheels of increasing size, because larger front wheels, up to 1.5 m (60 in) in diameter, enabled higher speeds on bicycles limited to direct drive. In 1878, Albert Pope began manufacturing the Columbia bicycle outside of Boston, starting their two-decade heyday in America.

Although the trend was short-lived, the penny-farthing became a symbol of the late Victorian era. Its popularity also coincided with the birth of cycling as a sport.

It is difficult to imagine just how active and important the shoe industry was in Massachusetts so long ago. Early New England shoemaking was a trade based upon one craftsman making a pair a day in one room cottages (called "ten footers"). Beginning in 1850 a series of inventions led to mechanized stitching and lasting operations and the birth of New England shoe industry followed rapidly. The productivity gains over the traditional shoemaker were on the order of 500 - 700%, yet the new methods also led to an extraordinary improvement in both quality and consistency. The explosive growth of the shoe industry in eastern Massachusetts at the turn of the century was impressive. Numerous companies were being started, and demand soared as product made its way west and south on newly expanded rail routes. Charles Alden's factory prospered, adding children's shoes to their offering of men's shoes and custom boots.

By 1933, at Charles Alden's retirement, operations moved to Brockton, Massachusetts and joined with the Old Colony factory. The Great Depression took a toll on countless shoe companies in New England. Although production demand increased during World War II, by the late 40's renewed consumer demand had fueled the search for manufacturing regions offering lower labor costs. Over the remainder of the century attrition would take hold as manufacturers looked farther and farther away in search of low cost labor and materials to meet the insatiable demand in the U.S.A. for low cost, mass-market consumer footwear.

Most of the companies who remained in New England could not compete in the demanding post-war economy. Yet Alden prospered by relying not on lower quality mass-markets but on high quality dress shoes, and excelling in specialties such as orthopedic and medical footwear. It was a period of growth and intensive development at Alden, especially in the design of comfortable, orthopedically correct lasts. In 1970 a new factory was constructed in Middleborough, Massachusetts where production continues today.

Alden is now the only original New England shoe and bootmaker remaining of the hundreds who began so long ago. Still a family owned business, still carrying forward a tradition of quality genuine-welted shoemaking that is exceptional in every way.

Rancourt & Co.

Rancourt’s line is made in their factory in Lewiston, ME. In addition, they contract for Sperry, Eastland, Red Wing, Ralph Lauren, Timberland, Helm, and Brooks Brothers, making an average of 1,000 shoes per week. Rancourt sub-contracts out to the local cottage industry. As of 2010, Rancourt has eight handsewers, all between the ages of 42 and 62.

Rancourt has an interesting history. Mike Rancourt’s father, David, bought the original family owned factory (name currently unknown) in the 1960s and sold it to Quoddy in the early 1970s. David Rancourt worked for Quoddy for until 1982, then opened his own company called Downeast Casual Footwear, which contracted for companies like Cole Haan. Downeast was sold to Cole Haan in 1987 and both Mike and David stayed on for five years. Cole Haan expanded to several factories in Maine and Mike became the president of manufacturing for Cole Haan. When Cole Haan was bought out by Nike, they began outsourcing production. As a result, Mike (and presumably David) left Cole Haan and opened Maine Shoe in 1992 with his wife by purchasing a closed-down factory. Maine Shoe also did a lot of contract work, notably for Allen Edmonds. AE bought Maine Shoe in 1997, and Mike stayed on to work for Allen Edmonds for some time. In October of 2009, Mike opened up Rancourt with his son Kyle.

In addition to handsewns, Rancourt has a Blake line that utilizes Blake/Rapid construction using synthetic innersoles wrapped in leather. However, Rancourt replaces the innersole during recrafting. As a point of curiosity, all Rancourt shell cordovan offerings are made from natural Horween shell cordovan dyed by Rancourt.

Quoddy - Owned by Kevin and Kirsten Shorey, Quoddy LLC was formed in 1998. The Quoddy family has been part of the Maine handsewers for generations back to the LL Bean days. Their line is sewn in their self-owned factory in Lewiston, ME, although their headquarters are in Perry, Maine. Clicking, preparation, and customer service are handled in Perry, while sewing and finishing are done in Lewiston. Their factory produces less than 500 shoes per week. About 25% of Quoddy shoes are exported to Asia.Quoddy has a staff of about 40, and they do collaborations with several companies including UGG..

Highland Shoe Company - Started by Adam Sutton, Highland Shoe Company does not own a line, but contracts for many other lines in the US.Their factory is located in Brewer, ME. Highland produces shoes for Yuketen, Timberland, Red Wing, Oak Street Bootmakers, Alden Cape Cod, and Sperry Top-Sider, and their factory produces just over 400 shoes per week and employs about 35 people. Founded in 2003, Highland Shoe Company was bought by Justin Brands, Inc in May of 2013, which is a subsidiary of Berkshire Hathaway and also owns Justin Boot Co., Tony Lama Boot Co., Nocona Boot Co., Chippewa Boot Co. and Justin Original Workboots. Of the shoes Highland makes, they estimate 50 to 60% of their shoes are exported to Asain markets.

New England Outerwear Company - Founded in 2012 by Greg Cordeiro and Dan Heselton, NEOC owns and operates its own small workshop in Lewiston, ME, consisting of seven people.

Arrow Moccasin Company - Arrow Moccasin Company was founded in 1951 by the Ouelette family and is located in Hudson, MA. All their moccasins are produced by the family on site.

Yuketen - Yuketen has a variety of offerings, some of which are made in America. Yuketen was a joint venture under Yuki Matsuda’s Meg Company with Ken and Kirsten Shorey during the late 1990s. Yuketen and Quoddy worked side by side until 2006. The Yuketen name is a derivation of the three founders.

All of Yuketen’s hand lasted constructed shoes are American made in their own workshop in Maine, likely in Lewiston, or contracted out through Highland or the local cottage industry. Although Yuketen’s lineup is extensive, they only produce whatever retailers order, so many models may never be made. All of Yuketen’s welted shoes appear to be made in Canada (possibly by Dayton) and Mexico (Pistolero). A pair of Yuketen shoes takes between approximately 96 and 120 hours to make.

Russell Moccasin - W.C. Russell Moccasin Company was founded in 1898 by Will Russell, who established the company in response to the Wisconsin logging business. It was eventually bought by Bill Gustin, who established the line. It remains a family owned and operated company located in Berlin, WI.

Allen Edmonds - A company that certainly needs no introduction. All of AE’s MIUSA handsewns are sewn in their Port Washington, WI factory, while all others are sewn in the Dominican Republic. They have done some contracting, including for Brooks Brothers. Rancourt used to do AE’s handsewn work in the late 90s and 00s.

Gokey/Orvis - Gokey has an incredibly rich history operating in several locations including St. Paul, MN where Gokey utilized a cottage system to produce their custom mocs. Acquired by Orvis in 1997, the Gokey/Orvis factory is now located in Tipton, MO.

Town View - Hailing from Dexter, ME, Town View Leather, owned and operated by Galen and Gayenne Wintle, offers their “Ole’ Maine Comfort Classics.” Galen worked for Dexter Shoe, a now-defunct Maine handsewer, for 22 years. They offer single and double soled moccasins designed for lounge use.

Wassookeag Moccasin - Also out of Dexter, ME, Wassookeag offers made-to-order traditional leather soled moccasins in several leather options, including triple soled mocs for heavy outdoor use.

Austin Handsewn - Austin Handsewn Company is located in South Paris, ME. They are likely one of the local cottage industry companies.

Willymoc - Willymoc was founded in 1985 by Willy O’Neal after several decades with another Maine handsewing company. Willy works with his wife Barb out of their own workshop to create custom mocs in a variety of leathers including a wide variety of exotics.

Final Thoughts - This was an interesting search, and although we don’t doubt that there are mistakes and missing pieces, we have made huge strides towards unraveling some of the mysteries. We’ll be happy to answer questions or add more pieces if you are aware of them.

We have concluded that the Maine handsewing industry in particular is a giant incestuous cesspool of contracts and collaborations and more. It’s highly likely that there are contracts that we have not able to track down. Note that the above only contains private label, distinguished by the lack of transparency. Star Spangled Banner 2013

Mount Olivet Cemetery, 515 South Market St. Francis Scott Key handed the "Star-Spangled Banner" song lyrics to his brother-in-law in 1814, the manuscript will be back with its author as it arrives at Key's monument and grave on its return trip to Baltimore. The "Star-Spangled Banner" manuscript arrived at Mount Olivet Cemetery escorted by The Old Guard and horse-mounted units from the National Capital Park Police -- Montgomery County. Units with The U.S. Army Old Guard include Colonial Fife and Drum Corps, Colorguard, and Escort Platoon. The ceremony included Dr. William Beanes (10:57) and Tracie Luck (04:05), a professional opera singer who grew up in Frederick, and the Fort McHenry Guard Fife and Drum Corps.

New interpretive markers that focus on Key's connections to Frederick, the writing of the "Star-Spangled Banner," and the story of the monument were also be unveiled. The manuscript was then returned to its permanent home at the Maryland Historical Society in Baltimore.

Camp David is the country retreat for the president of the United States. It is located in the wooded hills of Catoctin Mountain Park, in Frederick County, Maryland, near the towns of Thurmont, and Emmitsburg, about 62 miles (100 km) north-northwest of the national capital city of Washington, D.C. It is officially known as the Naval Support Facility Thurmont, because it is technically a military installation, the staffing is primarily provided by the Seabees, Civil Engineer Corps (CEC), and the United States Navy and the United States Marine Corps. Naval construction battalions are tasked with base construction and send detachments as needed.

Originally known as Hi-Catoctin, Camp David was built as a camp for federal government agents and their families by the Works Progress Administration. Construction started in 1935 and was completed in 1938. In 1942, President Franklin D. Roosevelt converted it to a presidential retreat and renamed it "Shangri-La" (for the fictional Himalayan paradise in the 1933 novel Lost Horizon by British author James Hilton).

Camp David received its present name in 1953 from Dwight D. Eisenhower, in honor of his father, and grandson, both named David. Eisenhower had the practice golf facility built at Camp David.

The Catoctin Mountain Park does not indicate the location of Camp David on park maps due to privacy and security concerns, although it can be seen through the use of publicly accessible satellite images. more...
